“Finishing off” a basement is probably the major wintertime handyman project. This enables a homeowner to increase his living space at relatively little cost and can be done indoors without being hindered by the elements.
One word of caution: Don’t attempt a project of , this sort if your basement walls are constantly damp or a sump pump is required to remove water from the floor.
After determining your basement is a likely candidate for conversion into a family room or bedroom, apply a good waterproofing compound to the walls as an extra precaution and fill all cracks and crevices.
After these preliminary steps, nail 2-by-2-inch furring strips vertically to the walls 16 inches apart. Measure carefully because Sheetrock and other types’ of wood paneling usually come in 48-inch widths. The furring strips should be fastened to the concrete or cinder block walls with concrete nails or a mastic adhesive.
The wood panels can be nailed or glued to the furring strips. If nailed, the finishing nails should be countersunk with a nail set and the holes filled with matching putty. The putty comes shaped like a pencil in various colors. Just rub it hack and forth over the hole until it’s filled and then wipe clean.
Some ventilation is also necessary between the basement foundation wall and the decorative paneling. This can best be accomplished by adding a few ventilators in the paneling along the top and bottom. These are available in nearly all hardware stores.
The openings for electrical outlets require accurate measuring because nothing looks more amateurish than a big hole between the outlet plate and the paneling.
Try to do most of the nailing up close to the top or along the very bottom so the holes will be covered by the top ceiling molding and bottom baseboard.
If you desire insulation, just staple the insulation “hatts” between the furring strips with the vapor barrier facing in toward the room. Staple it to the sides of the furring strips — not the flat surface — so if you use glue to hold the paneling, the glue will adhere to solid wood and not to the insulation paper.
